Force India Announce Long Term Mercedes Partnership

With the 2014 engine regulations being hugely different in comparison to the current horsepower, there will be plenty of talk and rivalry between the manufacturers.

So Force India have got in there early and signed a deal to continue their partnership with Mercedes. The German manufacturer has been powering the Silverstone based squad since 2009.

V6 Turbo charged engines will replace the current powerplants for the 2014 Formula 1 season. The decision was widely expected after the midfield team decided against signing Ferrari backed Jules Bianchi, snapping up former driver Adrian Sutil.

Team Principal Dr Vijay Mallya said in a statement from the team "Our new agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the coming years is the most significant in the history of Sahara Force India. With new powertrain regulations being introduced next year, I can't think of a better partner to work with as Formula One enters a new and exciting era. The agreement gives us the long-term stability we require and will enable us to continue our journey towards the front of the Formula One grid."

The newly inked deal is one which will last a good few years, as Mallya said cementing their partnership for the long term. Mercedes will supply them with engines, Energy Recovery System (ERS), transmission and "all associated ancillary systems under the new regulations for 2014." The deal also includes hydraulic systems and gearboxes.

Executive Director of the Mercedes AMG F1 Team, Toto Wolff, said "It is a significant milestone to announce our first long-term agreement for powertrain supply under the 2014 regulations. Sahara Force India was our first genuine customer in Formula One back in 2009 and we are delighted to enter an expanded, long-term relationship with them from 2014 onwards."

He continued "This long-term agreement offers excellent value in terms of the balance between price and performance. We hope it will mean Mercedes-Benz and Sahara Force India working together for the entire life cycle of the new powertrain generation."

Force India previously used Ferrari engines in their first year under that name back in 2008 after the take over of the former Spkyer and Jordan team.

They have had a mixed start to the 2013 season, with drivers Adrian Sutil and Paul Di Resta both scoring points at the opening round but contrastingly both retiring in Malaysia.

Leaving aside the financial woes of the owners which repeatedly gets a lot of publicity, credit must be given to Force India for the strides they have made. They seem to be making good decisions both on the investments to support techincal development of the team and in the choice of drivers. I do not know if its Mallya’s brain or he listening to his team and funding them, but the team is making good progress. I just hope this deal is yet one more of those good decisions.
