The BBC has
announced their 2013 Formula 1 coverage plans.
The main announcement was that the
broadcaster will provide 40 extra hours of network output. This is due to the
new addition of showing live practice sessions on BBC2 or BBC2HD for the nine
races that will be shown live.
They also took the opportunity to announce some new faces to their line up. Allan McNish, former Toyota Formula 1 Driver, will switch from Sky Sports to BBC Radio 5 Live as an analyst, alongside commentator James Allen and Pit Reporter Jennie Gow.
BBC F1 will also see a few changes, Suzi
Perry has already been announced as the successor of Jake Humphrey and both David
Coulthard and Eddie Jordan will continue as the programs pundits. BBC F1
Technical Analyst Gary Anderson will broaden his working range across TV, Radio
and Online.
F1 Journalist and broadcaster Tom Clarkson will join Lee McKenzie as the BBC’s Pit Reporter, McKenzie will also host a show on Friday and Saturday called “Inside F1” for the live races, broadcast on the BBC News Channel.
The BBC will show nine live Grand Prix’s, including Canada, Britain and Brazil. The popular F1 Forum will also return to the races shown live. The remaining 10 races will be broadcast through extended highlights.
BBC Radio 5 Live will broadcast every race live, its coverage also being streamed on the BBC Sport Website. The Radio Station will also broadcast a preview show on Thursday with special guests and discussion ahead of the race weekend.
Ben Gallop, BBC’s head of Formula 1, said “Everyone on the BBC team is hugely excited about the new season.
“Last year saw us rise to the challenge of bringing the action to fans through the mix of live television and highlights, delivering great programmes which were reflected in impressive audience figures.
“This year sees new faces, practice on BBC Two & HD on live race weekends and a greater sharing of talent across BBC television, radio and online.
“With Suzi Perry at the helm, we’re aiming to bring even more content, insight and access to audiences throughout the season.”
Legendary Commentator Murray Walker will star in “Murray’s Memories”, a series of archive based videos and articles for the BBC. They will be his personal recollection of some of the most historic and memorable moments in the sports history.
Coverage of F1 will also be available on the BBC Sport Smartphone App available for iPhone and Android.
