McLaren Confirm Lowe's Departure

Earlier in the year, speculation started to circle about Paddy Lowe's future as McLaren's Technical Director.

However today we have finally received an answer, with Tim Goss taking over from his role with "immediate effect". Rumours suggested Lowe would be snapped up by Mercedes, but with Paddy leaving towards the end of the year it looks like 2014 will be his year to switch to the Silver Arrows.
Paddy joined McLaren in 1993 but only recently moved to his role as Technical Director, in 2011.

Meanwhile his replacement Goss has been with McLaren for even longer, since 1990. He was responsible for McLaren's MP4-23, MP4-25 and MP4-27 cars. He is also responsible for their 2013 challenger, which has somewhat of a revolution compared to the evolution of the Red Bull RB9.

Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said on the team switch up “I’d like to offer my congratulations to Tim on his new position, which, after more than 20 years of exceptional service for McLaren, he richly deserves,”

“It’s a little-known fact, for example, that over the past 23 years he’s made crucial technical and engineering contributions to the winning of five of McLaren’s 12 drivers’ world championships and three of McLaren’s eight constructors’ world championships, and that he’s been the principal definer and developer of McLaren’s F1 car design function for more than five years.”

“I firmly believe that our technical and engineering team is the best in the F1 business, and that its strength in depth has always been and will continue to be an important element of our on-track success.”

Whitmarsh then revealed that Lowe “will be performing a different role within McLaren until the end of the year”. He later said “We wish him well when he embarks on a fresh challenge in 2014.”

If Lowe does join Mercedes for 2014, which is widely predicted, then the team will continue with their big changes to the upper structure of the team.
