Russia set for 2014 F1 Debut

The Russian Grand Prix looks set for a 2014 debut, more specifically November according to Mayor of Sochi Anatoly Pakhomov.

The circuit, located in Sochi, will race around the Winter Olympic park. The country is set to host the winter games in February 2014, with the race scheduled for November.

Pakhomov told Reuters  ”It will be held in November, after the (2014 Winter) Olympics,”

Rumours suggested that the race would be delayed to 2015 due to the construction of the circuit being behind schedule. However the Mayor swiftly denied the gossip, saying “The circuit’s construction is being closely monitored by the regional government. Everything is going according to plan. If we had any problems we would have asked for help from other regions.”

Some have questioned the late 2014 date due to the cool weather conditions in the Sochi region, with temperatures averaging around 10C and lows of minus 5C. November is also a very busy time of the year for Formula 1 teams. In 2012 there were three race weekends in the month, leading to concern that the calendar could be too overcrowded towards the end of the year if other races are not prepared to move dates.

With Russia's Vitaly Petrov in the running to keep his seat at Caterham, Russia are keen to host a race and are also looking at other series like MotoGP.
