Lotus retain Grosjean for 2013

After victory in the Race of Champion's, Romain Grosjean has received yet more good news.

The Lotus F1 Team confirmed that the Frenchman will stay with the former Renault squad for 2013, after a fast yet erratic return to the sport.

Grosjean made a rather disappointing entrance to the sport in 2009, failing to keep up with then team mate Fernando Alonso. After being dropped by the Enstone squad, he returned to GP2 and won the 2011 championship. He really fine tuned his race craft and the team, now known as Lotus, noticed.

They signed him up for 2012, a controversial move that needed convincing. However he certainly did that, qualifying third at the season opener. He scored on a number of occasions and stood on the podium three times, but unfortunately his season was also tarnished by some first lap crashes.

The worst of all was in Belgium, where a silly cut across Lewis Hamilton on the run to La Source caused horrible consequences, the two careering in to the innocent Sauber's and Fernando Alonso's Ferrari. Fortunately no one was hurt but he was punished for his actions, a one race ban for the Italian Grand Prix.

Despite the odd low moment, Grosjean impressed both the team and paddock insiders. He was not contracted for 2013 but after fending off the likes of Schumacher and Vettel to take the Race of Champions crown he was given the good news of a safe driver for next season.

Grosjean said  “It’s fantastic for me to be continuing with Lotus F1 Team for 2013. It’s superb to have the support of everyone at Enstone. I’m really looking forward to rewarding their faith when we take to the track in Australia. I learnt a lot in my first full season in Formula 1 and my aim is to put these lessons into practice with stronger and more consistent performance on track next year."

He continued " There are a lot of exciting developments occurring behind the scenes at Enstone and I am very excited with the prospect of the E21. I’ve already had my seat fitting and spoken with all the personnel involved with the build of the new car; I just can’t wait to get behind the wheel.”

Team Principal Eric Boullier also commented, saying “Romain is a great talent and we are pleased that he is continuing with us for a second season. With the continuity of two exceptional drivers like Romain and Kimi we are well placed to build on our strong 2012 with even better results in the year ahead."

The pressure really is on for him now, can he polish out those mistakes? Will he be consistent? I certainly think so. Lotus have given him a deserving third swing at the Piñata but he will need to firmly hit the targets set if he wants a long term future in the sport.
