Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test, Day 1

The first day of the Abu Dhabi Young Driver Test saw McLaren top the time sheets.

Kevin Magnussen moved to the top of the time sheets in the McLaren MP4-27, after a strong morning run. He edged out Red Bull's Antonio Felix Da Costa by just six hundredths of a second.

The test is not all about times, but the main focus is on testing and giving the young drivers more experience. McLaren's not so young test driver Gary Paffett finished the day in third after taking over from Magnussen for the afternoon session. For his time in the car, the Woking team trialed some aerodynamic and suspension developments which they will use in the final 2 rounds, or 2013.

The 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 champion Robin Frijns finished the day with the fourth fastest time. The Dutch driver did well in the Sauber, and it looks like he could be with the team for some time.

Alain Prost's son Nicolas ended the day fifth for Lotus, who were pleased with his progress. His best time of 1m44.194 was 1.5 seconds off Magnussen's top time. Luiz Razia got more F1 running under his belt for Toro Rosso, ending the day in sixth.

Giedo Van Der Garde put the problems he faced in his final FP1 session of the year for Caterham at the Yas Marina circuit behind him, completing 57 laps and ending the day 3 seconds down.

Da Costa was the busiest man of the day, completing 79 laps. It will be all change for day 2, with teams bringing in new drivers.
