Magny-Cours will return to the F1 schedule this week, as it is the location for a young driver test.
Both Mercedes and Force India have news on the test session, which will be valuable for all teams participating. There has already been a young driver test this year, with the first happening at Silverstone. However only Williams, Marussia and HRT completed testing there. The test will go on from the 11th-13th of September.
Force India have confirmed their line up for the test. The Silverstone based squad are bringing 3 drivers to the 3 day test. Jules Bianchi, Luiz Razia and Rodolfo Gonzalez will also drive the VJM05.
Jules Bianchi is the teams current reserve and test driver. The Frenchman will be racing around his local track on Wednesday after taking over from Luiz Razia. The Brazilian is currently competing for Arden in the GP2 series and lies second in the standings. Gonzalez will complete the teams running on Thursday. Rodolfo also races in GP2, but for the Caterham squad. Both GP2 racers have tested F1 machinery before.
VJ Mallya said on the decision The young driver test is a chance to evaluate promising racers from the junior ranks, it's something we take very seriously and we have always tried to give young drivers time in the car whenever possible. "
He added "We know Jules very well from his work during Friday practice sessions and it will be valuable for him to spend a full day in the car. Luiz and Rodolfo are both established GP2 racers and I look forward to seeing how they get on."
Mercedes have also confirmed that they will test some major upgrades, in the hope of improving their late season form. In recent races, tyre wear has been the main concern so updates have been more low key.
They hope to test a new Lotus style DDRS, as well as an all new exhaust system. The exhaust style is similar to that of McLaren and Ferrari. The team have also been keeping an eye on the Lotus DDRS and will trial that in the hope of ending the season on a high.
Ross Brawn commented on the neglect of upgrades, as well as the young driver test plan saying
" We weren't understanding the tyres and concluded that the most effective thing we could do, rather than go straight to a Coanda-system, was to understand the tyres, to get them a bit more under control, perhaps we should have done both in parallel but we concentrated on what we thought was the most important thing. We're much better at managing the tyres and we've actually had races where we've made our tyres last better than some of our competitors, which was not the case at the beginning of the year. We have also done work in the wind tunnel which, with our new 60 per cent model, has helped us understand more about that type of exhaust system. That's what we'll be evaluating this week."
Mercedes test driver Sam Bird is scheduled to test for the first 2 days, with Brendan Hartley bring brought in for Thursday if all the testing is complete.
Ferrari will join the two British teams testing in France.
