Robert Kubica has spoke out about his aim of an F1 return.
Kubica hopes he can be fit enough to return to F1 in the future, after last racing an F1 car in February 2011 while testing. The Polish driver was badly injured in a rally crash on the 6th of February 2011 after a crash barrier penetrated the cockpit, injuring his hands, arms and legs.
Robert made his racing return last weekend after a year of rehabilitation and recovery. He raced in a Subaru WRC car in the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana Rally in Italy, becoming an important step in his recovery.
Robert dominated the event and came out on top, winning all 4 stages in the rally. He claimed victory by over 1 minute.
He has not yet recovered full function of his wrist, meaning at the moment a return to F1 is not possible. However he told an Italian television channel, SkySport24, that he has high hopes for the future.
"Obviously I would have preferred to come back somewhere else, but this is a more active phase in my rehabilitation path, the hope is to be able to return where I was before (F1), and it's already a nice goal for me. But to be here in Biella is obviously emotional after 20-21 difficult months. Let's hope we can enjoy ourselves, without looking at stage times because in the end it's a matter of re-establishing the way of driving and helping the arm to recover better.
He then added "Having been a driver for 20 years, my body is accustomed to certain things, and I can feel these things only while I drive, so we'll see."
Speaking on F1 itself, he said "Obviously I will do everything in order to be in full activity next year. These months I will decide what I will do, because I've done various tests on the track with high-performance cars, but I need to decide myself what to do, what I would like best, and see whether the F1 objective is reachable or not. For sure what I'm doing next year will be with a view on the future, maybe 2014, but honestly I'm not thinking of it.
With the driver market being so tight, and so little movement, it will be tough to return but he has the determination and a strong goal to work towards, so we will have to see. However it is great to see him racing again.
