McLaren delay double DRS debut

Despite its ban for 2013, McLaren have confirmed that the double DRS device will be seen on their cars. However, that will happen later in the year.

Reports suggested that the MP4-27 will have the device fitted for testing at the Belgian Grand Prix, I covered it for RichlandF1 here, but Martin Whitmarsh had denied those rumours.

The device is currently being used on the Mercedes F1 car. Their spin on it brings air through a tube, from the rear wing and out of the front wing. This stalls the front wing and gives the car a speed advantage on the straights. Lotus have also tested the device, with the E20 cars being fitted the DDRS in Germany and Hungary.

Whitmarsh was talking to Autosport when he denied rumours of the device being fitted on his cars, saying  "There is no doubt that the double DRS is interesting, but I think there are other variants of it starting to be seen on other teams' cars, so they might not follow a pattern that we saw on the Mercedes, but we are not announcing when, where or if we are going to introduce it."

He went on to add "I think people will see different wing variants, certainly on our car in scrutineering tomorrow and as they take to the track. So we will see new bits but McLaren will not have a double DRS in Belgium."

Some, including me, were surprised by the decision as Belgium's Spa circuit, with its long straight, will suit the device. Expect Mercedes to be strong in the speed traps thanks to the device.
