Marussia have confirmed that their 2013 F1 car will run KERS for the first time.
The team, who joined F1 in 2010, are 1 of 2 teams that do not run KERS. The other team is fellow newcomer HRT, with the cost of running and developing the system being pretty high.
KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is a boost system which has been used this season by 10 of the 12 teams. The system can give a time boost of up to 5 tenths per lap on some circuits. HRT and Marussia are the only teams that are yet to use the device, but Marussia consultant Pat Symonds confirmed that they will be running it on their 2013 car.
He said "Yes we will be using KERS next year, we plan to adopt the system that has been developed by Williams, which was used by them with the Cosworth engine last year and is currently with their Renault-engine car. Our 2013 unit is a development of this.
He then added "We've been very impressed with the engineering, the efficiency and the weight. Williams are also a pleasure to work with both technically and commercially."
The Cosworth engine manufacturer used to be a front running supplier, but with teams like Caterham and Williams moving away from the unit, Marussia still feel confident in the V8 power.
Symonds also commented on this, saying "We are happy with the work we are doing with them and I think that we are working together to try and improve the areas that we are able to under the regulations, we are concentrating on improving the drive ability of the engine and enhancing its performance as a unit with the car."
Marussia have had a tough year. Their car has dropped off the Caterham CT-01 as the year has progressed, and the serious incident involving test driver Maria de Villota really affected the team. However, they are feeling confident with the progressing and are looking forward to another step up in 2013.
