Double DRS banned for 2013

Formula 1 teams have agreed a ban on the double DRS for 2013.

Mercedes were the first to create the innovation, there's used a hole in the rear wing which transferred air through the car and out of the front. Lotus lodged an official protest on the concept at the Chinese Grand Prix but it was rejected. Stewards deemed the device to not be illegal.

The advantage early on in the season looked big. After Mercedes clinched the win in China, teams started developing their own device. Lotus, who were the first to protest against it, designed their own version and tested it during free practice at the German and Hungarian GP weekends. It is thought that the device will be used at the Belgian GP at Spa in September.

No other teams have begun development of the part, some worrying that the development costs could be too high.

A discussion with the Technical Working Group saw the majority of the current F1 teams agree to ban it for the 2013 season. It is thought that Mercedes were one of the few to disagree, of course they had a head start on the device, but all that was needed was the majority of teams to agree.

It is thought that changes to the rules will be made by the FIA later this year.

However, some have criticised the move after the reports emerged. Some said that F1 seems to be losing its innovative nature, as every time a piece is created, it automatically gets banned or needs to be removed. We have seen this on a number of occasions, such as the Red Bull floor or engine map.
