Mclaren have solved Jenson Button's issues with the Mclaren MP4-27, the "issues" being the reason for his poor form.
Button has scored just 2 points over the last 4 races, being one of his worst slumps since his Honda days, and his best result so far this season has been his distant win in Melbourne at the start of the season. Mclaren are feeling confident that the drop in form will disappear at the European Grand Prix. The Woking squad have pin pointed some subtle set up problems for Button's 16th place in Canada while his team mate Hamilton took the win.
Mclaren's operations director Simon Robert's said during a Vodafone phone-in
"I think Canada was very interesting because fundamentally we run the same car for both drivers and they both have the same parts available. Although we allow them to adapt the set-up to their driving style, clearly we had something fundamentally different in terms of the tyre performance and car performance," said Roberts. We've been able to actually capitalise on that and there's been a huge amount of work back at the factory analysing the data and just checking that everything was as we thought it was.
He also admitted "We're pretty sure at the moment that there was nothing untoward with
Jenson's car and actually nothing fundamentally wrong with the set-up, but in
the subtleties of these cars there are some differences, and I think going to
Valencia we are optimistic that we've identified that." Robert's said it is "buried in the detail" and was not a straight forward problem, but they hope to have fixed it.
Mclaren are looking forward to Button being back to form in Valencia, a track where his best result is 3rd in 2010. Jenson attended the Royal Ascot on Wednesday and flew to Valencia where he is expected to use Lewis Hamilton's car set up to help him resolve the current issues.
