Mugello Test, Day 1

It may not have been ideal for the F1 teams and drivers, but the first day of in season testing (for 3 years) was a washout.

At 9am the cars emerged on to the track, with conditions being wet but drying after an earlier rain shower. However as the day progressed heavy downpours coated the track in water, meaning little running was done in the afternoon. Here is the review of day 1 at Mugello.

The home advantage was purely on Ferrari as Fernando Alonso topped the times at the Ferrari owned circuit. He set a best time of 1m22.444 early on, when the track was drying. This made it unbeatable and the post-lunch time session was severely affected by rain, meaning he was secure at the top of the times.

1 second back finished Mark Webber in the Red Bull RB8. The Newey designed car was often seen covered in sensors as they try to discover more down force after losing the blown diffuser. His time of 1m23.648 was followed by Jean-Eric Vergne, 2 tenths back, in the Red Bull sister car. He did cause the first red flag of the session however, after stopping out on track early on. Just 2 tenths further back finished Jerome d'Ambrosio in the Lotus E20. The Belgian driver was given a chance to test after sitting on the sidelines as the role of reserve driver.

Rosberg, like Vergne, stopped on track in the morning but he finished the day 5th. The Chinese GP race winner still managed the most laps of anybody, 49. At one point the circuit was officially closed due to the rain as the emergency helicopter could not take off in the conditions.

Kobayashi finished a decent 6th after a quiet day, with Paffett's fellow Mclaren reserve driver Oliver Turvey finishing 7th. The latter was scheduled for the morning so he got the majority of the running done for Mclaren, with Paffetts' time slot hampered by the rain. Jules Bianchi finished the day 3 seconds off Alonso's time, ahead of Rodolfo Gonzalez in the Caterham. Charles Pic was just behind the Venezuelan in 10th. Bottas finished 11th in the Williams, with Gary Paffett some 28 seconds off after being one of the only people to venture out on track in the afternoon.

The other man who was brave enough to take on the wet was Michael Schumacher. He completed 5 laps but none of them were timed. Better weather is scheduled for the next 2 days of testing.
