The Williams team recently parted ways with telecommunications giant AT&T but now they have a new partnership emerging, and its with an Olympic legend.
The team have announced a deal with former 200M record holder and Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson. His company Michael Johnson Performance Inc will provide thorough training for the Formula 1 teams pit crew and evaluate its current training programmes. In return for this training, the team will wear MJP on their team kit while the driver's overalls will also contain the logo.
Frank Williams has spoken about the deal, firstly admitting they met many years ago at the Belgian Grand Prix. He also illustrated his admiration for Michael, saying "The attention to detail and the commitment required is what sets these extraordinary individuals apart from the rest of us."He then continued by commenting on the deal, saying "We all know how crucial the brief time the car spends in the pits can be, and so it will be exciting to see how Michael and his team can help give us the edge in this respect."
Michael is best known for winning the gold medal in the 200 and 400M race's at the 1996 Olympics and has also set a number of world records. He said on the partnership "I have been a huge Formula One fan since I first attended the Grand Prix at Spa in 1990 where I had the great privilege of meeting Sir Frank Williams," and continued saying "Williams is known around the world as one of the most successful teams in the history of Formula 1 and has achieved great success over the years and we look forward to helping them continue that winning tradition. I am confident that the experience and bio mechanics expertise of the MJP staff can benefit the Williams F1 Team pit crew in their goal to cut hundredths and even tenths of a second from their pit stop times."
