Bruno Senna signs for Williams

It was officially confirmed today (17th January 2012) that the final seat at the Williams F1 Team will be taken by Bruno Senna. There has been rumour after rumour surrounding the seat. A number of big names like Kimi Raikkonen, Adrian Sutil and Rubens Barrichello were all mentioned but Bruno Senna has been confirmed as the teams 2nd driver, alongside Pastor Maldonado.

Bruno began his F1 career with back markers Hispania before replacing Nick Heidfeld part way through 2011. He raced for the Lotus Renault GP, now Lotus, team for the last 7 races of the 2011 season, with a best result of 8th place.

It means that the Senna name will return to the Williams team. Bruno's Uncle Ayrton Senna had been driving for the British team when his car crashed at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, tragically killing him.Bruno remarked on this, saying it will be "interesting to drive for a team that my uncle has driven for, particularly as quite a few of the people here actually worked with Ayrton." Williams have been struggling over the past few seasons, with 2011 being its worst to date. It recently lost its title sponsor AT&T but has denied claims Bruno was hired due to the sponsorship he would bring.

Senna was obviously ecstatic to of signed a deal with the world championship winning team, saying "I feel very privileged Williams has selected me as one of their race drivers." He also added "The team has a great heritage and I hope I can help write a good chapter in their history."

This leaves Rubens Barrichello on the sidelines. With only 1 seat remaining at HRT it seems the Brazilian will be missing an F1 season for the first time in 20 years.

Senna will take to the track in Jerez on the 9th of February when winter testing kicks off.

Comment your views below, was it the right choice? Would someone else have been better off in that seat?
