German Grand Prix Report

The German GP turned into a thrilling 3 way tussle for the lead, which lasted all race. Conditions where cool for the race with a top temperature of 14 degrees. I will do a general overview of the events which happened.

The start was slow for Webber, no surprise there. Hamilton capitalised on this and took the lead. Further back Vettel and Alonso swapped places while Button dropped down to 10th from 7th after getting bogged down

On lap 2 Alonso ran wide letting Vettel past, but Alonso took that place back again. A few laps after this however, Vettel caught a damp part of AstroTurf just adrift of the white line, causing him to spin and lose around 8 seconds.

This caused Vettel to lose track of the leaders and his race was ruined. Webber hunted down Hamilton and after going into the chicane too deep at the end of the lap, Webber pounced but lost out by lower straight line speed. Hamilton re-took the place down the straight after a few great corners of racing.

Pit stops caused Webber to regain the lead and Hamilton had to sit behind. The top 3 traded fastest lap times until the second stops. Webber pitted and came out 3rd, but lost out to Hamilton, they both lost out to Alonso however. Hamilton saw he had superior grip and went around the outside of Alonso at turn 2 in a superb move. Lewis pushed and set fastest laps to pull away from the Ferrari and Red Bull. The positions stayed through the 3rd pit stops but all Mclaren fans had their hearts in the mouths as Lewis struggled to heat up the harder tyre, after he was the 1st of the top 3 to pit. It payed off however and he crossed the line with 3 seconds in hand to win a superb race. Alonso was happy with 2nd and Webber was rather unhappy with 3rd, but took the points.

Further behind after a few unlikely errors Vettel claimed 4th after a tasty battle with Massa, which resulted in both drivers pitting towards the end of the race. Massa's pit crew where slow and it typically gifted another position to Vettel. Massa took a dejected 5th. Jenson Button would of Claimed sixth after showing better race pace however after taking 7th from Rosberg he slowed with Hydraulics problems. It means it was his 2nd retirement in a row. So sixth was claimed by an impressive performance from Adrian Sutil, who qualified 8th. This result was also the best result for a 2 stopper. Roberg and Schumacher took 7th and 8th on home turf. Kobayashi took a eye catching 9th picking up 8 places. The top 10 was rounded out by Petrov. The other Renault Lotus of Heidfield had a miserable home race after being taken out by Buemi in a collision at the tight chicane.

Just outside the top 10 were Perez, Alguesuari and Paul Di Resta. Maldonado was the only Williams home in 14th, with Buemi behind, losing time with a pit stop to replace the puncture caused by the contact wit Heidfield.
Best of the Newer teams was Kovalianen, no surprise there. He was ahead of Glock, D'Ambrosio and Ricciardo with troubled Chandhok struggling 4 laps down on his Lotus debut.

Retirements where Liuzzi, Barrichello, Heidfield and Button.

My Thoughts: Hamilton drove an incredible race and his pass on Alonso was breath taking. I was extremely upset by Button's race exit as he was picking up the pace. I am glad in a way Vettel was not on the podium as it is nice to see different people up there. In the commentary after the race they were talking about possible steward visits for Hamilton for jumping over a fence to see his team, and also Webber and Alonso for Fernando's lift back to the pit lane. I found the latter story very funny, you do not see that everyday. Webber was very kind for helping him out. The Hamilton incident is stupid, why shouldn't he be able to see his team and celebrate with them, it should not be investigated.
