2014 British Grand Prix in pictures

F1 returned to Silverstone for the circuit's 50th Grand Prix last weekend, with Lewis Hamilton taking a very popular victory on home soil.
Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo completed the podium. I attended the event on Saturday and Sunday as a fan, so some of the images featured in this piece will be my own.

Susie Wolff became the first female driver in 22 years to drive a Formula 1 car on a race weekend, but her first practice outing lasted just 20 minutes and a few laps before the car broke down. Felipe Massa crashed at Stowe a short while later in what was a disastrous day for Williams.

There were several other test and reserve drivers taking part in first practice. Robin Frijns was at the wheel of the Caterham CT05, while Daniel Juncadella drove the Force India VJM07 and Giedo van der Garde tried out the Sauber C33.

Nico Rosberg set the pace for Mercedes in first practice with a best time of 1m35.424, seven tenths clear of Lewis Hamilton who had to back off on his fastest time.

Hamilton moved to the top of the timesheets in second practice with a best time of 1m34.508, ahead of Rosberg and Fernando Alonso.

Saturday
Here was my view of third practice. I was seated towards the start of the International Pit Straight, opposite the Williams and Marussia garages.
Grosjean spun spectacularly in third and final practice for the British Grand Prix right in front of me, much to the delight of the fans in the grandstand.

Sebastian Vettel topped the damp and dull third practice session with a best time of 1m52.522, with Ricciardo and Pastor Maldonado next up.

Both Williams and Ferrari drivers were shockingly eliminated from the fight for pole position in Q1, with Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen finishing the session in 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th.

Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton both made it through to Q2, setting the 12th and 13th fastest times. However, the latter dropped five positions due to a gearbox change.

Rosberg took pole position for the British Grand Prix, with Vettel and Button improving to second and third despite rain falling mid-way through the session.

Hamilton slipped to sixth place in the closing stages of Q3 after failing to complete his final lap, as he didn't expect the track conditions to improve as quickly as they did.

Sunday
This was my view for Sunday. I was seated in the Woodcote A grandstand. I could see the Wellington Straight, Brooklands, Luffield, Woodcote and half of the old pit straight.
Silverstone put on a great show and the classic car parade was a fantastic feature, showing the evolution of F1.
The Red Arrows put on a brilliant show prior to the race with a very impressive air display.
Here is a picture that I took of the cars heading down the Wellington Straight on the opening lap.
And here is a picture taken just after Raikkonen smashed into the barrier after running wide at turn five and spun across the circuit.

Rosberg led into turn one but Vettel and Nico Hulkenberg dropped back, with Button and Kevin Magnussen moving up to second and third. Hamilton jumped to fourth.
The race was red flagged for nearly an hour for barrier repairs. It restarted under the safety car, with Hamilton quickly passing the two McLaren drivers.

Esteban Gutierrez and Maldonado collided early in the race, with the Mexican retiring a few corners later.

Rosberg retired from the race on lap 29 with a gearbox problem, handing the lead to Hamilton, who went on to dominate the rest of the British Grand Prix.
Alonso and Vettel battled intensely over fifth place for several laps, with the latter eventually winning the fight.
Hamilton took the chequered flag in first place to score his second home victory at Silverstone, from Bottas and Ricciardo.

It was a very popular podium with a British winner, a best ever F1 result for Bottas and the sport's happiest man - Ricciardo - in third.
Button just missed out on his first ever home podium, but fourth place was still a good result for McLaren.
