The Mercedes F1 team has tested a 'megaphone' exhaust on day two of the Barcelona in-season test.
Last month the FIA confirmed that it was investigating ways to increase the noise of the new 1.6 litre V6 Turbo power-units.
The quieter and more textured sound has had a mixed reaction so far in 2014, with some fans, senior F1 figures and race promoters complaining about the decreased volume.
In response, teams agreed to trial the modified exhaust that debuted on the Mercedes W05 on day two of the test, in the hope that it would amplify the noise.
Nico Rosberg was at the wheel of the car and completed aero runs early on, before trying it out at full throttle. The Brackley-based outfit then confirmed that it would not be running the exhaust for the rest of the day.
Early reports from those in the paddock suggest that the impact on the volume of the power-units has not been significant.
Rosberg said after the test: "Everyone was talking about the exhaust but to be honest I didn't notice much difference in the sound. Of course, we're happy to try these things if that's what the FIA and the fans want us to do. But perhaps this was not the right solution."
