Two new teams set to join the F1 grid?

The FIA announced last December that it was seeking interest from potential new entrants to join the sport in the near future.

The sport's governing body has yet to officially confirm whether any of the interested outfits have been accepted, but Ecclestone tipped two new teams to enter F1 when speaking to reporters at the Bahrain International Circuit on Sunday.

Full applications had to be submitted by the 10th February 2014, and a decision was supposed to be made 18 days later. However, it has been delayed to an unknown date.

NASCAR team co-owner Gene Haas confirmed in January that he had responded to the FIA's call. Ex-HRT boss Colin Kolles has reportedly submitted an application with financial backing from Romania.

"They will be accepted," Ecclestone said in Bahrain when asked about the Haas entry.

He added: "We have also accepted another team as well. Whether they will make it or not is another story.

"We are happy to have another couple of teams. I have spoken to Jean Todt (FIA president) and we agreed yesterday that if another two teams want to come in we will let them in."

There are currently 11 teams competing in Formula 1. The sport last welcomed new teams to the grid in 2010. Of the three newcomers from that season, Caterham and Marussia are still competing but have yet to score a point.

A team from the United States attempted to join the grid alongside Caterham, Marussia and HRT (which exited the sport at the end of 2012) but folded before the start of the season.
