The Brazilian will drive the new Mercedes-powered FW36 in five Friday practice sessions in 2014.

He will work closely with the Grove-based outfit both at race weekends and the factory. The 21-year-old will attend every Grand Prix this year and will also run at three in-season tests.

Nasr competed in the GP2 series for the last two seasons. He finished 10th in his rookie year with DAMS, before moving to Carlin for 2013. Despite failing to win a race, he ended the year fourth in the standings.

His appointment as reserve and test driver at Williams had been rumoured for some time and came as no surprise - particularly as the team had failed to confirm its driver schedule for the second winter test. Following the announcement, Nasr was straight in the car on Saturday for the final day of the test in Bahrain.

The 2011 British F3 champion said on the news: "I'm really happy to be joining the Williams family. They have a great history in the sport and some of the greatest Brazilian drivers of all time have driven for the team, so it's an honour to join names such as Piquet, Senna and Massa.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to make the next step in my career and I can't wait to get behind the wheel of a Formula One car for the first time in Bahrain."

Sir Frank Williams, founder and team principal, added: "Felipe has a strong track record of success in his career so far and we have been watching him closely for a while. We have a track record at Williams of bringing through new talent and giving them a chance to show what they can do on the world's biggest stage.

"By driving in five FP1 sessions this season, Felipe will have the perfect chance to showcase his skills and I'm confident he will be a strong addition to our driver roster."

He joins the team alongside new sponsor Banco do Brasil, which has supported him throughout his career racing in the feeder series. The team also revealed another new Brazilian sponsor, Petrobas, earlier in the week.

Countryman Felipe Massa moved to Williams for 2014 following eight seasons at Ferrari. Nasr will work alongside development driver Susie Wolff this year.
