The news comes as little surprise and was merely a formality; coming one day after the Enstone-based outfit's new E22 took to the Bahrain International Circuit with Renault power.

The extension of their engine-chassis partnership will continue the long and successful collaboration between Lotus and Renault that first started in 1995, when the team was known as Benetton. Success with the V10 engine came quickly, before Renault then took over the team at the end of 2001.

In 2002, the Renault F1 Team was created and took the word titles in 2005 and 2006. It remained as the factory team until 2010, when Genii Capital took over. Now re-branded Lotus, Renault has continued to remain involved in the squad as its engine supplier.

The firm's new V6 Turbo power-unit will power the team from 2014 onwards. Jean-Michel Jalinier, president of Renault Sport F1, said on the news: "We are pleased to see our partnership officially confirmed as the E22 takes to the track for its first official test. The relationship between Viry and Enstone has gone from strength to strength over the past few years.

"This is illustrated in no better way than the excellent – and very close – collaboration on the 2014 car, which is more technically complex than any previous designs. We hope this spirit will pay dividends on track this season and going forward into the new F1 technical era."

Matthew Carter, Lotus chief executive officer, added: "Lotus F1 Team and Renault Sport F1 have enjoyed a successful partnership these past few years and we look forward to continue to build on our relationship and collaboration in 2014 and beyond.

"It is the beginning of a new era in Formula 1 and we are pleased to embrace it together with Renault Sport F1."

The E22 was revealed to the public on the opening day of the second winter test, with Romain Grosjean at the wheel.

It has been a difficult few months for the team after losing a number of high-profile team members, including Kimi Raikkonen to Ferrari and ex-team principal Eric Boullier to McLaren.
