The Enstone-based outfit opted to miss the first F1 test, choosing to spend more time developing the car before it makes its public debut in Bahrain.

Pastor Maldonado, who joins the team after three seasons at Williams, was at the wheel of the E22 for its on-track debut, as part of two promotional filming days.

Despite managing just one lap on Friday, the shakedown was much more productive on Saturday with the maximum permitted distance - 100 kilometres - for a filming day being completed.

The team confirmed in a statement that the first run with its new car went smoothly, which will be encouraging news for Renault after its new V6 Turbo power-unit suffered a number of issues during the opening pre-season test.

"Both the chassis and the new Renault power unit ran without any major problems," the statement from Lotus said. "Pastor settled in very quickly and is already fitting into the team nicely.

"The car went together well and the design and build quality is another step up on the successful E21 of 2013, we are looking forward to a full testing program in Bahrain next week where we will start to see the potential of the new package."

Renault made some improvements to the new engine ahead of the Lotus shakedown. In a separate statement, they confirmed that the updated configuration was used without any reliability issues.

"Basic objectives were to support the Lotus program with a power unit configuration and operation to allow systems' checks and basic car operation," they said. "The latest PU configuration was deployed without any reliability problems, allowing Lotus to complete the maximum amount of km permitted on a filming day.

"Updates developed in the dyno at Viry during and post-Jerez test were run. Updates included minor hardware changes, software bug fixes and calibration improvements,” while Renault added that “preparations at the factory are ongoing for the two Bahrain tests."

The first of the two Bahrain tests will take place between the 19th and the 22nd February.
