I made regular visits to my local cinema in 2013, but my favourite trip there - by far – was to see Ron Howard’s stunning film Rush.
Telling the true tale of James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s titanic 1976 Formula 1 title battle, I enjoyed it so much that I gave it nine out of ten in my review.
I was eager to watch it as soon as possible, but I had to wait patiently until I returned from a trip to France. I had high expectations after reading such positive reactions, and they were easily met.
There is no denying that the film was visually spectacular throughout, almost perfectly depicting the mix of glamour and danger of the sport in the 70s. Filming on-track action was always going to be tricky, so I was pleasantly surprised with the footage that I saw in front of me. It was thrilling, exciting and looked very realistic – which was a tricky thing to do.
The story flowed brilliantly and stuck to the truth for the majority of the film, depicting just how dramatic the 16-race season was as the two contrasting characters went head to head for the world championship. Lauda’s crash at the Nurburgring was a particularly emotional moment, which proved how life-like the scene looked on the big screen.
I must say that whilst Chris Hemsworth played a very convincing James Hunt, Daniel Bruhl’s portrayal of Niki Lauda stole the show. It was very impressive indeed, and his numerous award nominations were well deserved.
Being the complete motorsport and Formula 1 nut that I am, Rush is undoubtedly one of the best films that I have ever seen, and I can’t wait to watch it again.
The thrill and excitement of Rush can now be experienced from the comfort of your own sofa, as it bursts onto Sky Store today.
What’s more, anybody who rents the film from Sky Store will be automatically entered into a very special competition with some truly incredible prizes. Up for grabs are two tickets to the British Grand Prix with VIP seating for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, travel and three nights in a five star hotel as well as a chance to go behind the scenes with Sky Sports F1.
And if you don’t win, there are still some fantastic runner-up prizes to take away. For more information on the competition, see the terms and conditions here.
