New Jersey and Mexico set to be dropped from 2014 calendar

Both races were given provisional status on the draft calendar that was revealed at the end of September, but both are expected to be absent from the final version when it is released by the FIA World Motor Sport Council in December.

Sources report that Mexico is definitely off the calendar. Bernie Ecclestone told reporters in the Yas Marina Circuit paddock over the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend that it would be a challenge to get the proposed new pit and paddock building, alongside minor track layout changes, ready in time for the November race date.

However, he did not officially confirm the news. Hermann Tilke, who has designed circuits like the Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain, Shanghai International Circuit in China and the Buddh International Circuit in India, had been in charge of creating the new development at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

The removal of Mexico from the calendar frees up two weekend's between the United States Grand Prix in Austin and the season finale in Brazil. It is expected that some reshuffling will take place in the order - potentially making the races in America and Brazil back-to-back.

Meanwhile the removal of the New Jersey race, known as the Grand Prix of the Americas, isn't surprising with the on-going financial problems and the logistical challenge of three races on a row with Monaco, New Jersey and Canada.

Ecclestone confirmed that the race will not take place, telling reports in Abu Dhabi: "New Jersey won’t happen because they still haven’t got the finance together for that. I put it on the calendar because they keep telling me it’s all going to happen."
