Hamilton unhappy with 2013 performance

Lewis Hamilton is unhappy with his performance so far this season and is confused by his loss of race pace in comparison to his one-lap speed.

The Brit is currently fourth in the drivers' standings with 169 points. In his debut season for Mercedes, he has scored one race victory and four further podium finishes.

His first and only race victory for the 'Silver Arrows' came at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July, the last race in 2013 not to be won by Sebastian Vettel.

The 28-year-old has won two races of more in all of his previous seasons. However, he is unlikely to match that record by the end of the year.

"Ultimately, I'm not particularly happy with this performance," he told ESPN. "I'm very happy with the team's performance and what the team has been able to achieve, and the development and hard work that has gone in has been remarkable. They have really delivered this year, but for whatever reason, whether it's just because it's a new car, I've not got on well with it."

He is looking to put in plenty of hard work over the winter, in order to stop a similar issue from occurring: "I'm just hoping that next year, with the tyres and the car, I can do some work over the winter and make the car work for me a bit better."

The 2008 world champion has started from pole position on five occasions this season and was on course for front row grid slot at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi last weekend, before a rear wishbone failure caused him to spin on his final lap.

He isn't sure why his one-lap speed can never translate into strong race pace, branding it "confusing."

He said: "I was half a second up on my [Abu Dhabi qualifying] lap and I would, unless I had made a mistake, 100% been on the front row and the position would have been different.

"But still going into the race... I don't know what happened or what it is. A lot of races it's been like that and with what we have it's difficult to overtake."
