Powell Post - Volume 8

Here is the latest Powell Post by the lovely Alice Powell. Here she discusses her thoughts ahead of the final round of the 2013 F3 Cup season, the hotly debated minimum weight limit in Formula 1 next season, a run-through of her month alongside paying tribute to Maria de Villota and Sean Edwards.
Hello Powell Post readers! I hope you are all well.

I’m starting this month’s blog on a very sad note. As most of you know, Maria de Villota passed away last week. It was very sad, especially after everything she has been through. I, unfortunately, never got the chance to meet her but she supported me via Twitter and Facebook. I would also receive nice messages of “good luck” or “congratulations” from her from time to time. Maria also promoted Women in Motorsport fantastically and also the safety of the sport. She will be missed by many. We also lost Sean Edwards this week, who lost his life whilst instructing in Australia. Sean was a top, top driver who was leading the Porsche Supercup Championship. Like Maria, I never met Sean but I was told he was a lovely guy and very talented. Rest in Peace Maria and Sean. Xx

So, it is that time of year, again, where the weather turns cold, rain falls (even more), you are debating whether to put the heating on… oh and motorsport championships come to an end. It is in my case anyway.

After a tough round at Donington Park two weeks ago, I am now joint first in the F3 Cup championship after dropped rounds. Dropped rounds are where you drop your worst result. In the championship that I am currently racing in, you can drop your worst three races. The past few races have been very tough as we have lost some pace in the car over the past few weekends. One of the problems is that I am racing a Toyota engine that is a good 30+ kg heavier than my nearest rivals’ - who race either Honda or Volkswagen engines.

The circuits we have been to recently have not agreed with the weight of my Toyota engine. I am swinging round 30kg more than my rivals around the fast corners, which not only harms me down the straight but also affects handling too. I have only one race weekend left which features two races; two races in which I MUST beat my nearest rival to win. The pressure is well and truly on.

So in a weeks’ time, Sebastian Vettel could be crowned the 2014 Formula One World Champion! I always like championships to go down to the wire, so I hope we don’t get a champion in India.

For 2014, there will be a new minimum weight rule in Formula One, and with the addition of heavier engines, it could leave the taller and heavier drivers without a drive as teams may struggle to meet the weight limit. A certain Mr Nico Hulkenberg, is rumoured to have been turned down by McLaren for a drive next season for being too heavy. He weighs 74kg. Is this weight limit and weight rule going to make it harder for drivers to get into F1, taking money out of the equation of course? Saying this, who would you rather have in your race team: A faster, yet slightly heavier driver, or a smaller driver, who is slower? I shall leave you to ponder on that!

So what else have I been up to? Well, fitness training, some work for my family and some sponsor PR events. It has been all busy, but good busy. The hockey season is also back underway now too, which keeps me busy most Saturday’s. I got the chance to go and watch one of my favourite music artist in concert at Southampton: Ellie Goulding. I love her music and her live performances are great!! It would be great to meet her one day. So, if you get a chance to go and see Ellie perform, do!!!

Next time, I hope to be writing to you all with good news!!

All the best.
