Stefano Domenicali says Ferrari are in better shape now than they were twelve months earlier, in 2012.
The Ferrari squad had a difficult start to the 2012 season, with car difficulties that meant their expectations were low ahead of the opening round in Australia. However fast forward 12 months and Domenicali thinks the team's current situation is "alright", but better than 2012.
The Scuderia suffered a poor pre-season test program in 2012 and were less than happy about the package they had heading to Australia. However they turned a fundamentally slow car in to one worthy of challenging for victory, and that it certainly did.
Alonso managed to win on three occasions in 2012, with the Spaniard and Brazilian team-mate Felipe Massa adding a large haul of podiums to the trophy cabinet too.
The F138 looks to be an improvement over its predecessor, however Domenicali does not expect them to be quickest in Australia.
He said "The situation at the moment seems to be alright - alright with the problems we have,"
"We will soon know the exact situation, although not in Melbourne because that is only the first race.
"But my view, the target, is to be close to the leading car. I will be surprised if we are the leading car because with the stable rules we were not the quickest at the end (of last season).
Ferrari's Team Principal then added "But if we are close together, within a couple of tenths (of a second), then with such a long season anything is possible.
"We need to make sure we are close to the best car, and then the team and the driver has to make the difference."
The Ferrari squad still have four days of running at this weeks Barcelona test to fine tune their Australian Grand Prix updates.
