Sergio Perez had tipped his former Sauber team to win in 2013.
The Mexican raced for the team in 2011 and 2012, but signed a new deal to race for McLaren. He officially joined the British team on January the 1st, but has spoken about the team he used to race for.
He told Speed Week Magazine "Sauber will be strong again, I am firmly convinced, the rules are fairly stable, the Swiss team has understood its car well, so why should they be worse than 2012?"
"I even think there could be World Championship events they are capable of winning."
The 22-year-old highlighted the fact that the rule changes remain largely unchanged for the 2013 season, which could help smaller budget teams like Sauber to compete.
He also spoke about his old team, admitting he still wants to see them succeed. "Sauber has done a lot for me, so I would be happy for the team to do well more than any other team - with the exception of McLaren of course!"
However new Sauber F1 Team driver Nico Hulkenberg has said that there is no guarantee that Sauber can get podium finishes in 2013.
The German raced for Force India in 2012, with a best finish of fourth place at the the Belgian Grand Prix. He spoke about the new season, saying he expects "good things" but not necessarily podium finishes.
He told Autosport Magazine "I wouldn't talk about scoring podiums at this point because it's too early, nobody knows where the cars are going to be. But I see the potential there and I hope that we can achieve a good things, whatever that may be."
Hulkenberg embarks on his third season in Formula 1 with a different team, and is confident that he can move out of the midfield teams when the time is right. "I think it will be a new situation once I am in a top car and obviously there will be more attention," he said. "It will take a bit of time to learn and to adapt but I think that I could handle it."
He has most recently been linked to a drive with Ferrari for 2013, but Red Bull Driver Advisor Helmut Marko has been quoted saying he is interested in Nico, whom he nearly signed to their junior team.
Sergio Perez will get to see the new McLaren MP4-28 on January the 31st, whilst Hulkenberg will be at the revealing of the new Sauber C32 on February 2nd.
