Defensive driving guidelines clarified

The FIA have clarified the defensive driving guidelines in Formula 1, creating improved driving standards.

The clarification of the defensive driving rule has been caused by a number of incidents earlier in the season. Nico Rosberg came under fire in Bahrain after 2 defensive moves on Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, veering off to the right and forcing both drivers off the track.

There have been a number of similar incidents this season that have caused this clarification, to help reduce the amount of incidents and dangerous defensive moves. Before the British GP Charlie Whiting wrote to all the teams to let them know of the change in driving standards.

(c) Autosport, Charlie said "any driver defending his position on a straight and before any braking area may use the full width of the track during his first move provided no significant portion of the car attempting to pass is alongside his. Whilst defending in this way the driver may not leave the track without justifiable reason."

"For the avoidance of doubt, if any part of the front wing of the car attempting to pass is alongside the rear wheel of the car in front this will be deemed to be a 'significant portion'."
The clarification shows that a "significant portion" of the car attempting to pass must be alongside for the driver being overtaken to give 1 cars width to the side of the circuit. Looking at the Rosberg and Alonso move from Bahrain, if Alonso's car had been a few inches further forward Nico would have not been able to move across like he did, he would of had to leave a 1 cars width gap to the white line bordering the track.

This move will make overtaking safer and reduce the amount of crashes or contact between cars.
