Alonso's £24million salary dwarfs grid

Fernando Alonso has been revealed as the top paid driver on the grid.

Alonso tops the table at a whopping £24million per year paid by his Ferrari team. That is just under double what is paid to the next best paid driver, Lewis Hamilton.

It comes as little surprise due to Ferrari's strong financial position and Alonso's big talent. It was one of the biggest signings in recent times when Alonso moved from Renault to Ferrari and after 2 years of decent results Alonso has been revealed as the driver on the highest pay.

#   Driver         Salary Per Year
1)  Alonso       £24million
2)  Hamilton   £12.8million
3)  Button       £12.8million
4)  Vettel        £8million
5)  Webber     £8million
6)  Massa       £8million
7)  Rosberg    £8million
8)  Schumacher £6.4million
9)  Raikkonen  £4million
10) Kovalainen  £3.2million
11) Glock       £2.4million
12) Kobayashi £800,000
13) Grosjean  £800,000
14) Hulkenberg £400,000
15) Perez  £400,000
16) Petrov  £400,000
17) De La Rosa  £400,000
18) Vergne  £320,000
19) Ricciardo £320,000
20) Maldonado £320,000
21) Senna £200,000
22) Karthikeyan £200,000
23) Di Resta £160,000
24) Pic  £120,000

It is a very interesting grid, mainly at the bottom of the field but the top of the pack also spring a few surprises. No surprise is that Massa is paid £16million less than his team mate Fernando, while Red Bull and Mclaren pay their drivers equally. Raikkonen earns significantly more than Grosjean, as does Kovalainen compared to Petrov and Glock in comparison to Pic. It is even more surprising that there are only 11 drivers earning over £1million per year.

At the bottom of the table Di Resta is paid £240,000 per year less than team mate Hulkenberg. Pic is at the bottom some £2.2million down compared to his team mate. This is most probably due to Glock's sponsors and the fact that experience is important in a small and relatively young team. Also interesting is how Maldonado is paid more than Senna. Maldonado has very rich sponsors which is probably the main reason and I see that as the only reason why the drivers are not paid equally. De La Rosa is paid £200,000 more than Karthikeyan which shows how the veteran was attracted to another stint in F1, but why so much more? Maybe it was to persuade him to make the step back into racing.
