Barcelona test, (1) Day 2

The second day of the first Barcelona test saw the Lotus team absent, along with HRT, after pulling out of the remaining 3 days after chassis issues. The teams were down 1, but still raring to go and put in some impressive times.

Teams all completed over 50 laps, roughly a race distance, with the order of the pace still unclear.

Nico Hulkenberg took the honours of topping the times on day 6 of winter testing. His best lap of the day, 1 of 112, was a 1m22.608 and was set just before lunch time, the prime track conditions. It was set, however, on the fastest Pirelli tyre. This red ringed super soft lap was one of only a few with many teams not using it today.

The morning and lunch time sections of the test were used for short runs and testing out aero, while the cooler conditions in the afternoon were a mix of long fuel runs, testing out fuel economy and tyre durability.

Sergio Perez finished the day 2nd overall, the Swiss teams best position so far. The Mexican driver was also running the super soft tyre and had set his fastest time just moments before Hulkenberg, leading the session for a brief moment. He was just 0.040 seconds back and circulated the Circuit de Catalunya a respectable 85 times.

He said "Today was a lot better, even though in the end we lost a bit of track time because of the exhaust problem. I am happy with how things went, we have gathered plenty of information to go through now and I believe we are working in the right direction."

Sebastian Vettel was just 3 tenths behind fellow compatriot Nico Hulkenberg, but he set his fastest lap on the slightly lower grip but more durable softs. This meant that putting all the cars on an equal playing field, Vettel would of still been fastest. He completed 104 laps, including a few longer runs. His time of 1m22.891 was set just before lunch time.

Behind 2 time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, was Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari F2012. It was a positive day for the Italian team as they gathered a significant amount of data and knowledge, thanks to Alonso's decent 87 laps. He was the first driver out of the 1m22's with a 1m23.108. It was a late lap which was set in the afternoon, the only driver to move up after the lunch break.

Daniel Ricciardo was 5th in the Toro Rosso, still keeping the STR7 consistently in the top 5 of each day of testing. His time of 1m23.639 was the fastest lap of 50, despite the Toro Rosso team having the most dramatic day of testing so far. The 2nd day of testing in Barcelona was only 30 minutes in when the first red flag was shown, thanks to the STR7 stopping out on track after running out of fuel. The second time was late in the afternoon, with the Aussie not returning to the track after that. He said on the problems "The afternoon did not go to plan, but the morning was positive and we did all the runs we had planned for the first part of the day."

6th place was a decent result for Lewis Hamilton, who did a range of long and consistent runs. He lapped the popular track 120 times, the second day in succession he has had a problem free, 100 lap plus test. His best time of 1m23.806 was 1.8 seconds slower than Hulkenberg's effort.

Nico Rosberg was 7th in the all new Mercedes W03, unveiled on Tuesday, after completing a reliable 82 laps. His time was over 8 tenths down on Lewis Hamilton, only just under 2 seconds behind his fellow German Hulkenberg. It was the first time he had driven it properly, after doing a slow and tentative few test laps around Silverstone before its official unveiling.

8th place for Williams reserve driver Valtteri Bottas was a respectable job in the FW34. He completed 117 laps but was over 1 second down on the Mercedes of Rosberg. He was the only driver in the 1m25's, with Vitaly Petrov making his debut for the Caterham team in 9th with a 1m26.605. This meant he was just under the 4 second gap to the leading Force India. He completed 69 laps and said "I think that was a pretty positive day. We completed 69 laps and got through most of what we had planned. This morning we had a couple of issues with the seating position and the brakes, but you expect that from a new car and they were little things that we were able to fix quickly. In the afternoon we put in a few more long runs and that'll give us a lot of data to work on tonight and I think tomorrow it will be more of the same."

Charles Pic rounded out the times in 10th, and last, place in the 2011 spec Marussia car. He was under 1 second down on the Caterham CT-01 but that is expected due to the blown diffuser Pic was running. He completed 108 laps.

Toro Rosso were the only team to hit problems, with many teams using the morning for low fuel running and the afternoon for high fuel running. It is still unclear how the order is set, but Red Bull, Force India and Mclaren are up there for sure.
